2. Why Do Nepali Months Have Variable Day Counts (29 to 32 Days)?

Unlike the Gregorian calendar, where month lengths are governed by fixed arbitrary rules and a quadrennial leap year (February 28/29), the Bikram Sambat calendar is governed by true solar transits (Sankranti / संक्रान्ति).

The moment the Sun passes from one zodiac sign (Rashi) to the next marks the first day (1st / १ गते) of a new Nepali month. Because the Earth's orbit around the Sun is elliptical rather than circular, the Sun travels through different zodiac constellations at varying speeds. As a result, months like Baishakh, Jestha, or Ashadh can have 31 or 32 days, while months like Poush or Magh may have 29 or 30 days depending on the year.
