What is the difference between .ico and .png favicons?

A .ico file is a multi-resolution container format developed by Microsoft that can bundle multiple icon sizes (such as 16x16, 32x32, and 48x48) into a single file. Modern browsers also support direct .png favicons, which provide superior compression and alpha transparency.

Why do I need multiple favicon sizes?

Different platforms display favicons in different contexts: 16x16 is used in standard desktop browser tabs, 32x32 for high-DPI Retina tabs, 180x180 for Apple iOS bookmarks, and 192x192 / 512x512 for Android Chrome Progressive Web Apps. Providing all sizes ensures crisp rendering without browser blur.

Are my uploaded logos or images uploaded to any server?

No. All canvas rendering, image scaling, background coloring, ICO binary construction, and ZIP archiving take place 100% locally in your browser. Your images never leave your device.

Why does my browser still show my old favicon after updating?

Web browsers aggressively cache favicons to speed up navigation. To see your updated favicon, either perform a hard refresh (Ctrl+F5 or Cmd+Shift+R), clear your browser cache, or append a version parameter like '/favicon.ico?v=2' to your HTML link tags.

What is an Apple Touch Icon and is it required?

An Apple Touch Icon (apple-touch-icon.png, 180x180 px) is used whenever an iOS or iPadOS user adds your website to their iPhone home screen or bookmarks it in Safari. Without it, iOS captures an unstyled screenshot of your web page as the icon.

What is site.webmanifest used for?

The site.webmanifest is a JSON file that provides information about your web application (such as app name, icons, and theme colors) to Android and Chrome. It allows users to install your website as a standalone Progressive Web App (PWA).
